KEVI Newsletter 13th January 2023

Senior Leadership Team Update

Happy New Year.

It was wonderful to welcome our students back and hear about some of the exciting activities they were involved in over the holiday period. We started the term by reflecting on the following quotation by Maya Angelou,

"Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better."

We asked students to reflect on the last calendar year and think about what they did well and what they could do better. We followed that up this week by reminding them about the support network they have around them, not only from home but from Team KEVI, the Senior Leadership, the Head of House, teachers, the House Champion, the Head of Departments and the pastoral team.

This week we were delighted to welcome Stuart Burns, Chief Executive Officer of the David Ross Education Trust, for a tour of the academy. It was a pleasure to show him our classrooms and he commented on how polite, respectful and well behaved our students are. We know this of course but it is nice when visitors to the school recognise it too.

Yesterday we hosted our Year 10 Parents’ Evening online and we’d like to thank everyone who attended. We have made the move to online parents’ evenings to try make it as easy as possible for everyone to attend regardless of where they are, using a mobile phone or computer. Our next parents’ evening is for Year 7 on Tuesday 7th February. Details will soon be sent home and the office will be in contact to check appointments are being made.

It was great to see our house competition resume this week with house table tennis. The House Championship is very close and we are so pleased that over 80% of students have represented their house in at least one event this year.

Our Year 11 students have made a really positive start since returning from the Christmas break. There are just 5 school weeks until the final mock exams start. All Year 11 students should have started a thorough revision programme by now. Next week we will be helping the students to write a revision planner and everyone should be completing two hours of revision each day.

We are so determined that every student at KEVI will have the choice to do whatever they want later in life because they will have the qualifications that will open opportunities for them. We have extra Year 11 revision lessons each day and we are pleased to see growing numbers of students staying behind to take part in these. The ‘period 6’ timetable is as follows:

Values

Honesty

One of our core values at KEVI is honesty. We often think of honesty as a quality to display when interacting with other people. However, it is equally important to be honest with oneself.

In assembly this term we have looked at this quotation from Maya Angelou:

We must always seek to improve, not because we are not good enough, but because we can. However good we are at something there is always potential for improvement. This quotation from Maya Angelou reminds us that it is good to reflect on things and seek to improve. When we know better, we can do better.

However, this only works if we are honest with ourselves. How hard did you work this week? Where can you improve next week? What did your KPI tell you about how hard you are working? What changes have you made since the last KPI? Are you being honest with yourself?

Why we do what we do -Academy Rationale

Attendance Matters

Every week all students who have had 100% attendance the previous week are now going to be awarded with their name on a strip of House-coloured paper and a choice of three boxes to put it in.

At the end of the year a name will be pulled out of two of the boxes where students could win a £100 voucher or an Amazon fire tablet. The third box is a community initiative whereby every name put into the box equals an item KEVI will purchase for the local Spilsby foodbank.

This reward initiative supports students to always strive to improve their attendance. If they do have a day off and lose their 100% for the term, they can still aspire for 100% in all the remaining weeks, which will enable them to access expert teaching and wonderful house competitions as well as being entered for this draw at the end of the academic year.

Child absent from school

If your child is unable to come to school but well enough to complete work at home, please direct them to look at their knowledge organiser. The knowledge organisers are the core learning that is taking place in each subject for that term and if they were to learn every piece of information on these, they would not be falling behind with their lesson work missed.

We do not provide bespoke learning for individual students who are off sick as we do not have the capacity to do so.

House News

House Table Tennis

A great start to the house table tennis today with staff starting the competition! Next week we have Year 11 on Monday followed by the other year groups for the rest of the week. It has been an exciting start to the tournament.

Talent Show

Students have been informed of the KEVI Talent Show, which is on the last day of term. We are excited to see our talented students show off their skills.

If you are looking to take part in the Talent Show and need help with this please ask a member of staff to support you. Remember, if you are looking to take part keep practising between now and the last week of term, ready for auditions. Good luck!

Thinking Ahead – My Future, My Choice

Attention Year 8 & Year 9!

  • What are your future plans & career possibilities?
  • What plans to do you have after you have completed your GCSEs?
  • Do you plan to go on to further/higher education? If so what courses might you study?
  • What career ideas do you have for the future at the moment?

In Years 7, 8 and 9 you will be learning new skills and knowledge that will give you the confidence to help you plan your next steps. This process starts with your careers education in school which will encourage you to think about your strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes. You will also start to make some important decisions that could influence your future career path as you will be choosing your subjects to study for GCSE. This process will begin for all Year 9 students early this year.

Each week we will show you examples of the various careers linked to the subject you are studying. This week’s career idea is ........

Attendance

Attendance last week was 90.5% so a slight improvement on the previous week!

Well done to Year 11 with attendance of 95.4% which is not only the highest attendance per year group but also the biggest improvement; as you’ve gone from a disappointing 88.5% to a fantastic 95.4%. Keep up the good work!

House Attendance

Minerva had a good week last week with attendance of 94%, closely followed by Arete at 92%! Apollo was 90% and Mercury was at 88%.

If you would like to discuss your child’s attendance or need any support with attendance, then please contact Mrs Kwee or Mrs Ziller on 01790 753260 or tkwee@kingedwardacademy.co.uk to discuss ways to support your child's attendance.

Table Talk

We would love you to focus over the dinner table this week about how we can connect effectively with others and how we can support each other through difficult times. Who are your go-to people for support? How often do you connect with them? How do you connect with them? Who are you a support for and how do you help them? Supporting each other is such a fundamental part of being a successful society and we want our young people to recognise this.

Mr A Carrington - Vice Principal

Homework

Prep homework started again this week using the Term 3 knowledge organisers. All knowledge organisers are also on the website in case anything gets misplaced. To further support students with their prep homework we have introduced a schedule for the half term which lets them know which part of the knowledge organiser they should be concentrating on each week. An example is below:

These schedules can be found on the website at the link: King Edward VI Academy - Homework (kingedwardacademy.co.uk)

Any student who fails to complete their homework, or does not complete it satisfactorily, will receive a lunchtime detention for 15 minutes.

Teen Support

Watching your child grow into a young adult is a massively rewarding experience. It is also a very challenging one and at times it can feel overwhelming. Learning how to build a positive relationship with your teenager represents an important step toward meeting that challenge.

By actively developing a positive relationship with your teenager you will both be better placed to cope with hormones, relationships, sex and changes in behaviour.

Here is a link to a great website that gives lots of advice about how you can best support your child at home. We hope you find it useful. Parenting Teenagers - The Spark | Parents and Families

Word of the Week

Veracity

Veracity: noun – the quality of being truthful; the habit of speaking the truth.

Word origin: verax (Latin): speaking truly.

When the teacher heard the other side of the story, she questioned the veracity of the student claiming they were completely innocent. In order to maintain the trust of others, our veracity is essential.

Veracious: adjective – truthful. He knew that she had a veracious personality.

Times Tables

Years 7 and 8 will be reciting their times tables to help embed them in their long term memory.

At the end of each lesson, they will stand behind their chairs in silence, preparing for themselves for the next lesson and just before they leave the whole class will chant the timetables assigned for that week.

Week commencing 16th January 2023 - we will be chanting our 9 times table.

Accelerated Reader

KEVI20 WC 16/01/2023 Period 1

The new library cataloguing system is fully up and running and students have been delighted to find that they can now reserve copies of the next book they want to read, making reading an entire series easier than ever.

Books in the 13-Storey Treehouse series by Andy Griffiths are particularly popular with Year 8 boys at the moment, several of whom have said that they are the first books they have really enjoyed reading.

Their popularity began at KEVI with a recommendation from our Librarian, Miss Villiers, who is always ready to point students in the direction of suitable books which will provide interest at the right level of challenge on an individual basis for students; there is no reason for any of our students to read a book in which they are not interested since they all have access to Miss Villiers' support three times each day.

A further series which is proving extremely popular among our KS3 girls is the Gallagher Girls series by Ally Carter which focusses on Cammie Morgan who goes to a spy school for girls, experiencing new adventures in each book.

Books are issued to students for four weeks and can be renewed at any time. We are now able to send a series of reminders to pupils and to parents to return or renew books in order to ensure that we are able to maintain our stock and circulate books to all students. If you receive a reminder to return a book, please respond to it so that we are able to renew your book if needed or lend it to other students.

The Library is open at 8:30am, breaktime and lunchtime every day.

Ms K Davis - Head of English Department

Sports News!

Term 3 has started with a bang; clubs are back up and running seeing great participation. Fixtures have started up with the Year 7 & 9 boys taking on Thomas Middlecott Academy in 5-a-side football.

Both games were fiercely contested with both teams looking to repeat their results in the previous fixture before the Christmas break. The Year 9 boys came out with an emphatic 5-2 win with Harvey scoring 4 goals. The Year 7 boys came up short in a 3-2 loss but battled hard to try and win the game. It was great to see the boys playing in the new KEVI football kit.
